Per conèixer els diferents tipus de cervesa existents al món se sol utilitzar les pautes de BJCP. El Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) és una organització nord-americana fundada el 1985. Un dels seus objectius principals és elaborar guies d'estils de cervesa per tal de fomentar el coneixement i l'apreciació dels diferents estils descrivint-ne les característiques sensorials.
